DESERONTO LEADS SERIES 1-0

Craig Smith

Despite not having home-ice advantage in the finals the Deseronto Storm hosted Game One of the GMHL's Russell Cup Finals, Friday night.

The first goal came about six minutes into the first from a player that was a big part of getting the Storm to the finals, Jeff Morris. Andrew Bobas and Kyle McRae helped on the goal. Just over a minute later we were tied again. Rob Childs scored for the Shield to make it one-all. It wasn't until midway through the second when another puck crossed the goal line. Deseronto capitalized on a power-play at 9:11 of the second when Travis White scored from Jeff Morris and Kyle McRae. The Shield would tie it up again in the third period. Chad Meagher got the unassisted goal. Then when the Storm were down a man, Brad Clark got loose and got one past Mark Wardell for the shorthanded marker and the game-winning-goal. John Sweet did add an empty netter and the Storm won game one 4-2.

STORM WIN SERIES 4-2

The Deseronto Storm headed into Game 6 tonight hoping to close the Elliot Lake Bobcats out at home. That goal didn’t start off well with the Bobcats making it 2-nothing in the first 1:12. After that the Storm switched goaltenders as Jens Kansell replaced Travis Elvin between the pipes. Just before the midway mark of the opening frame Deseronto pulled back within one when Brad Clark scored on the power-play. Brad Edwards and Todd Munden got the helpers. After one the Bobcats lead 2-1.

In the second period the Bobcats ran into some penalty trouble including a 5-minute-major high sticking penalty that Elliot Lake coach Ryan Leonard was upset about. Leonard said after the game that this was what cost the ‘cats the game. The reason, Deseronto scored three goals in that five minutes. Jeff Morris, Todd Munden and Andrew Bobas got the goals. Each goal scorer also got an assist and so did Brad Clark. The Storm led 4-2 after forty.

In the final twenty the Bobcats did make things interesting. Just over the midway mark Branislav Jankovic got Elliot Lake’s first goal past Jens Kansell pulling within one. Six minutes later they tied it. Roman Jurak got the game tying goal. It looked like we were headed to overtime when Jeff Morris scored the eventual game winner. Kyle McRae and Todd Munden got the assists. Brad Clark would add an empty net for the 6-4 final score.

The South Muskoka Shield also advanced after a win tonight and will host the GMHL finals once again against the Storm.
