Storm vs. King Wild

01/30/10

Lara Couch

Friday night welcomed the King Wild to Deseronto. The first period was off to an exciting start when the Storm opened the scoring just two minutes into the game with a power play goal by Brad Clark. Clark scored his second of the night with nine minutes left to go in the first. The Wild quickly retaliated with Brenden Farrugia finding his way to the net to score one for the wild.  Bobby Sayers didn’t wait long to put another one up for the Storm followed by Andrew Bobas, making it 4-1 after the first.

In the second the Wild didn’t waste any time, Matt Marchese netted one just 2 minutes into the period. The Wild continued to come on strong with Brandon Amirault making it a one goal game. The Storm decided to come out and play half way through period when Cam Edwards shook things up with a power play goal. With just 3 minutes left on the clock Andrew Bobas put up his second of the night, giving the Storm a 6-3 lead going into the third.

The Storm cemented their lead halfway through the third with Jeff Morris scoring his first goal of the night. Todd Munden followed just a few minutes later. The Storm came out on top with an 8-3 victory.

Storm vs. Bucks

1-24-10

Craig Smith

A rare Sunday matinee game saw the Brock Bucks come into town once again. Nothing really came in the first period ‘til there was only 35 seconds left. At that point the Bucks opened the scoring with a goal by Mark Zavorin. 1-nothing was the score after one.

In the second Deseronto went down two men, then they went down two goals. Stan Shcherbakov of the Bucks netted one with a second left on the 5-on-3 power-play.  The Storm kept heading to the box though but their luck turned a little when Brad Clark found a loose puck and it found the back of the net with a shorthanded marker. Brock still had a 2-1 lead though after forty minutes.

As the Storm saw time running out on their comeback chances who else, but Brad Clark tied the game. He had help from Todd Munden on the power-play goal that made it 2-2. With under four minutes remaining Cody Nugent got called for hooking and went to the box with his head hanging. Luckily for him Travis Elvin bailed the Storm out several times before the buzzer went and we headed to OT for the second home game in a row.

In OT Tyler Dever got his name on the game sheet in the wrong column. Dever got two minutes for slashing 49 seconds in but after complaining was assessed and extra two. Down a man for the next four minutes didn’t look good. Cam Edwards got the puck up to Brad Clark and with all the open ice Clark found his way to the net scoring his second shorthanded goal of the game and completing the comeback for Deseronto.

A quiet opening period saw only one goal between both teams and it didn’t come until almost the 18-minute mark of the period. On a power-play, their third one of the game, Deseronto capitalized as Brad Edwards flung one past Moose goalie Andrew Selbie. Travis White and Cam Edwards got the helpers.

In the second the goal lights weren’t getting bright but the whistles were blowing left and right.

Deseronto were called on seven penalties and several times were down by two people. The only good that came out of the second for the Storm was the fact they killed six penalties, unfortunately the Moose scored one goal. Jon Minard from Steve Rigutto and Gianmarco Aiello.  1-1 after forty minutes.

The third period was even quieter than the previous two. Nothing happened until twelve and a half minutes when Brad Edwards went to the box for two. Toronto capitalized. Minard got his second of the night and the Moose were up 2-1. Then a couple minutes later the Storm were on the power-play when Brad Clark tied the game. The Storm would have to kill another penalty when Tyler Poole tripped up a Moose player. They managed to do so and we were tied at the final buzzer.

Overtime came and a mistake from the bench a minute and a half in on the Toronto side. Too many men on the ice and Brandon Booth could do nothing but watch from the box serving the two minutes. Brad Clark was the Storm saviour once again scoring the overtime goal from Cam Edwards and the Storm snuck out on top 3-2.

Storm vs. Oro-Medonte 77's

01-15-10

DESERONTO-What a night it was, when the Oro-Medonte 77s came to town for the first and only time this season. The Storm and 77s faught until the final buzzer and when I say faught I mean their were fists flying everywhere, from on-ice to in the crowd. Ten minutes into the first frame there were a handful of fights in the same stoppage of play. With the extra men in the box for the 77s, Deseronto capitalized. They would score two power-play goals within a minute. Jeff Morris got the first while Cam Edwards got the next. Then after another fight between Kirby maracle and Antonio Morris the Storm would take the two goal lead into the first intermission.

Deseronto came out fast scoring another power-play goal just 37 seconds into the second. Then two minutes after that Jeff Morris scored again to put the Storm up 4-0. Oro would score their only goal of the night minutes later on a power-play. Sly Spencer was credited. That goal didn't stop the Storm though. Brad Edwards would score again before the period was up. Then throw in another fight, Danny Smith vs. Sylvester Spencer and we got ourselves a second period. 5-1 Storm after forty.

A very quiet opening to the third period, nice for a change some would say. Approaching the seven minute mark however Tyler Dever got frustrated with one of the officials and was eventually tossed. Five minutes were put on the board but that didn't stop Brad Clark. He skated up ice and netted a short-handed marker making it 6-1. Jeff Morris would eventually get his hat-trick goal at 13:17 and give the Storm the win 7-1.

Storm vs Brock Bucks

01-10-10

Craig Smith

DESERONTO - Coming off a heartbreaking 3-2 loss Saturday night the Deseronto Storm looked to rebound this afternoon against the Brock Bucks.

Deseronto came out strong scoring just three minutes in. It wasn't hard for them though as they did it on the powerplay. Cam Edwards got the goal from Brad Clark and Jeff Morris. They were quickly up 2-0 nothing when Brad Edwards scored with help from Travis White and the new guy, Kyle McRae. However, less than two minutes later the Bucks broke Jens Kansell's shutout. Denis Afanakin scored the goal set up by Mark Zavorin and Myles Mitchell making it 2-1 Storm after one.

In the second, Deseronto's special teams came to play. The first goal of the period was a short-handed goal by Brad Clark just two minutes in. Brock would capitalize on that power-play though. John Ambrose scored with help from Alex Vasilchenko and Matus Duris. After that Mark Zavorin got a five minute high sticking penalty that would eventually end up costing the Bucks the game. Ryan Brant would score on the power-play and Brad Clark would get the eventual game winner in the same five-minutes. The Bucks wouldn't learn their lesson though. Andrew Keogh went to the box for hooking and the Storm would capitalize on that penalty as well. Tyler Poole made it 6-2. Then with only 20 seconds lefton theclock Brad Clark got his hat trick goal scoring three goals in one period. After the second Deseronto had a stranglehold lead on the Brock Bucks 7-2.

In the third not much action until two fights midway through the period. The first almost a minute long between Travis White and Derek Bristol. The second, four seconds after the following puck drop a staged fight between Brad Davenport and Andrew Keogh. The two dropped their gloves and politely removed each others helmets at centre ice before the fists started flying. After officials broke it up the two shook hands and headed to the dressing room. Later, once again on the power-play, Andrew Bobas scored to make it 8-2. Myles Mitchell would score for the Bucks a few minutes later, but the game was already out of reach. Under a minute to go each team netted another. Kyle McRae would get his first goal as a Storm player while Alex Vasilchenko would get one for the Bucks with four seconds left on the clock. The Strom come out with the win 9-4.

South Muskoka Shield @ Deseronto Storm

01-09-10

Craig Smith

DESERONTO - It was a quiet return to the ice in 20-10 for the Deseronto Storm. They were hosting the South Muskoka Shield Saturday night. The Shield were all over the Storm in the first twenty minutes, but only managed to slip one goal past netminder Jens Kansell. Rob Childs got the goal with help from Dylan Sontag and Chris Lane at 8:26. That would stand as the only goal of the first as South Muskoka went for the first break up by one.

In the second the Shield carried the momentum but Deseronto picked it up when given a chance on the power-play. Andrew Bobas capitalized on a Rob Childs tripping penalty to tie the game at a goal a piece. At that point the momentum had swung in favour of the Storm as three minutes later they were up 2-1. Travis White scored the goal on a 4-on-4 oppourtunity. Tyler Dever and Cam Edwards got the helpers. Before the period was over however, the South Muskoka Shield scored to tie it up. Dan Soderberg scored from Adam Macbeth and it was 2-2 after two.

The third period was pretty quiet until time started winding down. In fact there wasn`t much action until there was under a minute remaining. With 26-seconds remaining the Shield slipped in a heartbreaker giving them the 3-2 lead and the two points.
