Storm Shield Game Four

Craig Smith

From here on out it’s do or die for the Deseronto Storm. They hosted game four Saturday night and had to beat the South Muskoka Shield or they would face elimination. Before the game GMHL President Bob Russell, Commissioner Ken Gerard, League Manager Dan Garneau and Director of Communications Marshall Uretsky were on hand to hand out the 2008/09 GMHL Awards, including Coach of the Year to Storm Head Coach Matt Barnhardt. Onto the game now, it was back and fourth for the first ten minutes until South Muskoka opened up the scoring at 10:03. Derek Rogers scored the first one with help from Ricky Gleenslade. Then just under five minutes later the Shield scored again. Troy Storm got this one, assisted by Rob Childs and Sly Spencer. The Storm would scored before the buzzer though. During a Max Qwarnstrom penalty, Jeff Morris put in a shorthanded goal from Brad Clark . South Muskoka still lead 2-1 after the first though.

The second period started with two quick goals. Deseronto tied it up just 51 seconds in when Brad Clark blistered a slap shot past Shield goalie Eric Pye on the power-play. Cody Maracle and Jens Kansell got assists. South Muskoka would regain the lead sooner than later when Chad Meagher scored at 2:28. The goal was assisted by Dylan Sontag and Travis Saltz. Deseronto would tie it up on the power-play. Max Qwarnstrom from Clark and Maracle. The Storm’s other special team would capitalize short-handed to get their first lead of the game. Todd Munden would get it with help from Tyler Poole and Clark. Dylan Sontag would then tie it later at four a piece. That was where the score stood after forty minutes, 4-4.

The third was a crazy period too with goals from both teams. Although Jens Kansell stood on his head numerous times during a 5-on-3 the Shield were able to slide one past him. Troy Storm scored on the power-play with help from Kirk Kelly. Deseronto thought they had the Shield on the doorstep of a loss when they scored at 9:42 and tied it 5-5. Clark got the PPG from Morris and Qwarnstrom. However, Muskoka had another plan, just seven seconds later they took the lead back. Dylan Sontag scored again assisted by Travis Saltz. The Shield guarded their lead until 16:32 when Deseronto tied it at six. Qwarnstrom was credited with the goal. Jeff Morris and Brad Clark got the helpers. The score would stand and for the third game in a row we went to overtime.

Unlike the past overtimes this one’s story sang a different tune. Jeff Morris scored just 1:53 in and the Storm kept their Russell Cup chances alive. Deseronto won this one 7-6 and hope to extend the series again Sunday in Gravenhurst for game five.

Storm Shield Game Three

 Craig Smith

Deseronto hosted game three of the GMHL Finals Friday night. The South Muskoka Shield was in town to take on the hometown Storm. Before the game Gravenhurst Mayor John Klink was on hand for the ceremonial puck drop. Also, the GMHL recognized Official Ryan Harrison by presenting him with his 200th Game achievement award. The pre-game was a lot busier than the entire first period. Nothing happened until under the one minute mark when the Storm opened the scoring. Max Qwarnstrom got the goal from Brad Clark. That goal happed with 56 seconds left and was the only scoring to report in the first.

The second however was pretty busy, unfortunately not for Deseronto. The Shield scored three goals. Troy Storm tied the game just 2:36 into the period. Ten minutes later and only five seconds into a powerplay South Muskoka took the lead. Manuel Overlietner scored it from Rob Childs and Dan Soderberg-Andersson. Then Chad Meagher scored unassisted at 19:09. The Shield lead 3-1 after forty minutes.

It took a while for the Storm to realize they didn’t want to go down in the series 3-nothing. They did end up waking up with five minutes remaining though. Tyler Poole scored with help from Jeff Morris at 15:04 to pull the Storm back within one. Then not long after Max Qwarnstrom would score again tying the game at three. That score would stand and we would head to overtime for the second game in a row.

The first OT is ten minutes as always with no flood but a mandatory three-minute resting period. After that the teams were back out and ready for action. It wasn’t long before the Shield would capitalize on a rebound and slid one past Travis Elvin.

Storm Lakers Game Six

Craig Smith

The Deseronto Storm are the South Division Champions!

The Storm had won every game they scored first in and Saturday night the got goal number one. Max Qwarnstrom capitalized on the first power-play of the game and Deseronto had the 1-0 lead. On the verge of elimination though the Lakers knew they needed the win. Innisfil scored almost ten minutes later to tie it at one. Dustin Timm got the goal from Max Douglas and Brian Davidson. It took the Storm just a minute and a half to regain the lead. Greg Martyn scored with help from Qwarnstrom and Deseronto lead 2-1 after the first.

The second was a quiet one until Innisfil woke up with two and half to go. After Jens Kansell got a delay of game penalty for projecting the puck out of the playing surface, the Lakers scored. Max Douglas got it this time, from Caleb Lister and Jonathan Dew and the Lakers tied it at two before the break.

Innisfil continued to roll into the third. They scored just five minutes in and took their first lead of the game. Connor Hendry scored it from Aliaksei Kulikouskiy and Max Douglas. They lead 3-2. The penalty box stayed empty the entire third period and it wasn’t until late in the final frame where things started to get interesting. Just under the two minute mark the Storm pulled their goalie to get the extra attacker out and it worked. Max Qwarnstrom was able to get his second of the night to tie the game. Neither team could score before the time ran out so this one was heading to overtime.

And it didn’t take long. Just 49 seconds in to the extra time Jeff Morris scored to clinch the South Division title.
